Why do children make words up?

Language acquisition requires complicated brain activity, during which your child will stretch himself and find his way as he develops.  His first words are the fruit of a long process of development.  It may only be you who understands what his babbling means,  but is he really making up his own words ? Don’t be so sure.  During his pre-vocal stage, he will produce everyday words, ‘suitcase’ words which have several meanings and even strange sounds which sound like sentences, as he plays with tone and practises making more high-pitched sounds.  He may even try to imitate you, this is all a part of your child’s own ‘jargon’, which he will develop and refine over the course of several months with your encouragement.
