Learner Phrases

Each children will develop at his own pace, but there are still key stages of the language acquisition process:

In the womb: Baby can recognise its mother’s voice.
Birth – one month: Baby is sensitive to intonation and the emotion in your voice.  Crying expresses a range of different emotions. 
From 1 to 5 months: First vocalisations, cries of joy and early syllables.  
From 5 to 7 months: Establishes relationship between vowels and movement of the mouth, imitates intonation and starts babbling.  
From 8 to 10 months: Produces syllables and first simple words, like ‘dada’ or ‘mama’.  Responds correctly to ‘Give me…’.
From 10 to 20 months: Recognises plenty of words, can relate word to an image.  First words.
From 2 to 3 years: Understanding syntax, moving on from words to phrases.  Rapid daily increase in vocabulary, acquisition of singular and plural as well as word play and action words (verbs).
