Melanie is 32 and has a five-year old son. "I split up with my partner about a year ago. Ever since, Robert has been my number one priority. I want to give him a balanced life and surroundings." Melanie moved into a flat while her ex stayed in their old house with Robert: "I wanted him to stay at the same school with the same friends. The break-up was a big shock for him and I didn't want him to be even more unsettled by changing school".
Shared custody
Melanie and her ex decided straightaway to share custody of Robert and split his time between their homes. "To help him deal with the break-up, I explained to him that he's lucky to have two bedrooms with twice as many toys! And I'm in contact with his dad a lot too."
