Nannies, prams, nappies and all the expenses babies bring can be a real deterrent for some couples. From birth to six months, the average cost is estimated at well over £1000 (and that's not including loss of earnings). It can cost £180,000 to raise a child from birth to the age of 21.*
Some couples don't have the means or the desire to give up their childless way of life. For some women, having a baby is a massive constraint which would take up lots of time and energy...to say nothing of giving up lie-ins!
