Kim: "I don't want the responsibility"

Kim is a management assistant and is 32.
Right now, I don't want children. I'm too happy the way I am with my husband. We've been together for 5 years and I don't think we're going to change our minds. I don't envy people who have childen. If they want that sort of life, that's great - but it's not for me. Sometimes I even think that some people don't deserve kids if they don't look after them properly, smoke like chimneys around them, talk badly to them and never show them any affection. I'd rather not have children than be a bad mother. A baby would be too much of a burden in my life, and I don't want to take another life into my hands. People say I don't know what I'm missing but I do. I know what I'm missing out on, because I do think about it. But I just like my life the way it is. Leave people with children to their own problems! I think that having children is very easy, but bringing them up and looking after them isn't. People need to realise this before they embark on something they can't turn back on.

Kim is worried about being a bad mother if she has a baby when she doesn't want one. This is quite common. But the reasons she gives could well be hiding other, deeper reasons rooted in the subconscious, such as the relationship she had with her own mother and her own fears.
