Tattoo, meaning, sign of recognition, communities

Tattoos are an ancient custom, especially in some Oceanic countries because they were a reminder of which tribe you belonged to. Today, they're no longer symbols of membership but a personal choice. However, you'll still find tattoo "communities" where tattooed people reveal and compare their tastes.

Fans of a particular artist can express themselves through their choice of clothing and also through their tattoos. It might be the effigy of a star, or an identical tattoo to a celebrity's own. Some people opt for tattoos of poems or song lyrics.

Astrology followers may exhibit their star sign, Chinese symbol or numerology number, which is very practical if you want to know whether you're compatible with the person you've just met!

Lovers show that they've got their other half "under their skin" by tattooing their name on their bodies. Not advised for more fleeting romances...

Many women have a little fairy tattooed on their lower back or a little Maori design around their ankle. These designs are currently the most popular and don't show much individuality: women with these tattoos are pretty much joining another tribe, that of followers of fashion!
