Presents you'd like yourself

People who give presents they'd like to receive themselves want to share something of their own world with others. They are seeking a certain form of intimacy with the receiver. But if you don't take the other person's tastes and wishes into account, you can come over as selfish and lacking in empathy. We have a selfish need to exist through others as well as through ourselves.
