Speed dating, baby showers, and now divorce parties are the latest US phenomenon to invade our shores...
The first divorce parties
It all started out when freshly-divorced American women began organising bashes with their girlfriends to help them get through the wait for their divorce papers. On the agenda: cocktails a-plenty to drown their sorrows, cutting up the ex's shirts, girly films (Thelma and Louise, Private Benjamin, The War of the Roses, Bridget Jones), suitable soundtrack (think I Will Survive) and even voodoo using an effigy of the woman's ex-husband...These gatherings gained a slightly unglamorous reputation as parties where women let out all their emotions, ended up blind drunk and in tears.
A positive step for new singletons
Event organisers have been quick to get in on the idea and to bring a touch of glamour to divorce parties. Forget negative thoughts of revenge: the idea is to help the divorcee get her life back together again. From the invites to hiring the hottest nightspots, strippers and organising a gift list, professional planners can take care of everything. New Yorker Tina, 28, threw a divorce party with 50 of her close friends and family in a chic restaurant in Manhattan. "I shouldn't really say so, but I enjoyed my divorce party far more than my wedding day," she says.
