Common myths

Despite sex education and information campaigns, Brits aren't all that in the know. We may be aware of the most common methods of contraception but we're still partial to certain misconceptions.

Some common myths:

> Taking the pill can make you infertile. This is incorrect: it has no effect on your fertility.

> The pill protects against sexually transmitted infections. Wrong! Only condoms can protect you from STIs. 

> The IUD (coil) is only for women who've already had children. False! You can use the coil regardless of whether you've had children or not.

> Inserting and removing an implant is time-consuming. Not at all: it takes just over a minute to insert an implant, and less than three minutes to remove one.

> Taking a shower or bath straight after sex will stop you getting pregnant. Incorrect. Sperm will have already entered the uterus.

> You can't get pregnant if you didn't have an orgasm. Wrong again. A woman doesn't need to have an orgasm to become pregnant.

> You can't get pregnant during your period. No, you can!
