Gynaecologist's advice on safe sex abroad

Gynaecologist Dr Alan Levy gives us some practical advice on staying safe on holiday.

What's the simplest way of managing your contraception on holiday?
Changing your contraception. Oral contraceptives can prove difficult when you travel abroad, mainly because you have to maintain a 24-hour interval between pills. With time differences this isn't always easy. You might be better off changing your contraceptive when you go on holiday and using an easier one such as the vaginal ring or the patch, which works for a month. You can always go back on your usual pill when you get back. Ask your doctor for advice.

What if your period is due while you're away?
If you want, you can miss a period by not having a break in between packs of the Pill, without condulting your doctor. Just run two packs together. There's no risk involved because a woman's periods have no bodily function except in pregnancy. A 'non-stop' pill which completely stops your periods has just come out in the US.

What are your tips for holiday hygiene?
Holidays are a prime time for casual sex and people may even end up sleeping with multiple partners. This carries a very high risk of STDs, which is why using a condom is vital. Condoms should be used alongside the Pill, which only protects you from unwanted pregnancy. Also, sand, chorline and sweat can change your vaginal balance and cause urinary tract infections. Make sure you shower well after swimming, cleanse and use feminine wipes. If you're particularly prone to infections, try inserting a tampon before swimming to absorb the chlorine.
