When you are ready to submerge yourself in the world of comping then slogan competitions are the next step. They require more effort than simply sending in your details, however with effort and practice you can earn some serious rewards.
Companies use slogan competitions as a way to get people thinking creatively and positively about their products. Sometimes winning slogans are used in future promotions - it’s very cheap marketing for them.
Most slogan competitions require you to buy the product, and they may ask a few simple questions designed at weeding out people who are not ready for the challenge.
Seasoned ‘compers’ do well because they recognise the low uptake of competitions and get loads of practise entering hundreds themselves.
The slogan competition generally involves the phrase completing the first half of a sentence they give you in an “apt and original” manner. While these words may intimidate the unseasoned comper, they represent easy money if you are willing to put your mind to it.
How do these compers refine their skills?
- Study previous published winning slogans. Dot Comper has a searchable database of over 40,000 prize winning slogans.
- Generally winning slogans rhyme, have rhythm and preferably a pun. Go out and grab yourself a rhyming dictionary and dictionary of English idioms at Amazon.
- Make sure the opening line flatters the promoter/product.
- Closely follow the word limit. Slogans that go over the allowed amount of words are disqualified.
- If possible enter more than once. But be careful - don’t send in several horrible slogans. Instead come up with two really good ideas that are different in their approach - for example one that is clever and witty and one that is more direct and serious. Be careful to check the terms and conditions of each competition as some specify that you can only make one entry.
- Use a good pen, write clearly and always check for mistakes. All entrants that don’t follow these easy steps are automatically disqualified and you want to make it as easy for the judges as possible.
- Remember - the more obscure or difficult the competition, the fewer the entrants so the better the chance you have at winning.
