Savings tips for 2012

With financial experts predicting more economic doom and gloom, it’s time to get your finances in order - you'll need some good savings tips for2012.

We know it might seem dull and boring but it really is important to ensure that you're making the most of your money and saving what you can.

Andrew Oxlade, writer for This is Money recently wrote that spending less and paying down debts is a "toxic combination for the economy in the short-term, although necessary for long-term health."

So although we need to sort out debt problems and ensure we have some savings for the things we want and for the future, we still need to think about our lives now. Don't spend what you don't have but don't lock everything you have away either.

The best savings tips for 2012 are those that give you the best chance of happiness and security now and in the future.

Savings are fundamental but there's little point in putting away what you earn if you haven't paid back what you owe.

Being in the black is the new black.

Don't buy what you can't afford and don't be tempted to borrow for things you don't really need - yes, sorry that includes the holiday to Thailand and must-have Mulberry handbag.

These are our new mantras for 2012: live within your means.

Although for years we've been encouraged to rack up debts and throw caution to the wind when it came to consumption. The time has come to grow up and wise up about finance.

A 2011 study by the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society (N&P) found that 35% of British women have no savings at all compared to 27% of men.

The Fawcett Society - who campaign for gender equality - noted a similar discrepancy back in 2007 with their report on women’s lifetime savings patterns. They stated that "the gender savings gap is even bigger than the gender pay gap, leaving women vulnerable to economic shocks."

As women we're still likely to be paid less than men, we retire earlier and we live longer and yet we don't have savings or pensions... can you see the problem?

Savings and pensions aren't all that complicated and with a little good tips from the experts we can prepare for our future and still enjoy our lives in today... even if we have to choose campsite over Caribbean cruise...

At least with a tent in Cornwall you'll be helping our local economy too. Feel better? Hmmm, well, change isn't always easy.
