A Brit invasion at the MTV Video Music Awards 2012
It certainly was a British invasion at the MTV Video Music Awards last night as UK artists dominated the star-studded event.
The One Direction boys continued their meteoric rise to pop world domination, winning trophies for Best New Artist, Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video.
Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson showed that they have well and truly broken America as they scooped three of the biggest gongs at the ceremony.
The teen sensations, who were originally discovered on The X Factor, were up against British boyband rivals The Wanted for the title of Best New Artist.
They also seemed to catch the attention of the ladies, with 18-year-old Niall getting a kiss on the lips from 27-year-old Katy Perry as she presented him with an award for their hit single What Makes You Beautiful.
Clearly Niall was thrilled at the attention from the stunning popstar, and he promptly tweeted a pic of the pair smooching, writing: “@katyperry looks like its official ... me and you.”
An amused Katy, who is nearly ten years his senior, replied on Twitter: “I'll be your Mrs. Robinson...”
As well as One Direction, British band Coldplay were honoured with Best Rock Video for their single Paradise, but Chris Martin and the other band members weren’t on hand to pick up their prize as they had a concert in the Netherlands.
Singer/songwriter Calvin Harris was there though and as well as performing, the 28-year-old Scot scooped the Best Electronic Dance Music Video for his hit track Feels So Close.
He also collected the most coveted award of the evening - Video of the Year - with Rihanna for their collaboration We Found Love.
Although she has yet to have a hit in the US, rising Brit star Rita Ora made sure she made a big impression on the night, wearing a custom-made black and silver beaded Emilio Pucci jumpsuit with sheer panelled front.
