Stars of the show Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville are up for Best Actress and Actor gongs, while it's also in the running to take home the prize for Best Drama Series.

But it's up against some strong competition - Mad Men, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game Of Thrones are also nominated for Best Drama Series.

Downton received 16 nominations in all, but it's the three major categories they'll most be hoping to win.

The ITV favourite, which is returning with a third series, won two major Emmy Awards in 2011 - but they could be even more successful this year.

They also took home Emmys for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special as well as Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Costumes and Outstanding Miniseries.

Mad Men and American Horror Story are leading the nominations list with 17 nods each.
