The band - who were put together on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002 - took to Twitter to announce the news after the final gig of their Ten: The Hits Tour in Liverpool.
The group posted from their official account last night: "Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts Thank you!! This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade.
"It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter!!
"Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together. Love you lots."
After a string of huge hits, the girls took a break back in 2009, ensuring fans they were just "on hiatus".
It wasn't until three years later in October 2012 - a decade after they got together - that the group announced their comeback tour, greatest hits album and a new single.
But the girls - Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle - remained tight-lipped over whether they would stay together and release new music once the Ten tour ended.
Before their final concert last night, Cheryl, 29, posted some rather cryptic tweets that suggested the end was in sight once and for all.
She wrote to her 3,652,721 followers: "Last show !!! When did that happen ??! It was just 5 minutes ago we were starting rehearsals! Feel like I've been in a time machine.
"And now we're here !! One of my favourite places ever for the last show !! Liverpool!!! LETS GOOOOO..."
She added: "To the people that haven't been able to make it, for what ever reason, we feel your support regardless and have done for 10 yrs.
"To the people that have been to almost as many shows as we have lol let's make this a celebration of the past 10 years."
Irish-born Nadine, 27, who now lives in America, was even more emotional ahead of the Liverpool gig.
She tweeted: "I love you @GirlsAloud fans so so so so so much! You have given me everything! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
"All the hairflips, twisted ankles, early mornings, late nights, sore throats, tears & facing height fears are all to try and give you the show you deserve!
"I have seen you many of you at the tour work as hard as us! That is why I cried last night on stage & probably tonight again. Not sad, happy.
"Happy tears. I cannot thank you enough. I love seeing all your faces. Ok more tears. I love you all forever. Xxxxx NC."
Meanwhile, Nicola, 27, tweeted: "#TenTourMemories YOU ❤."
