Olympic medal expectations weigh heavy on the nation’s sweetheart Tom Daley. But his supportive mum Debbie says that it’s the memory of his father, who passed away in May 2011 from brain cancer, that motivates him to succeed. She told the Daily Mail: “Losing his father has made Tom mature faster than ever. He is determined and dedicated and he has reached out to Rob's memory for inspiration.

“Seeing him compete at a home Games was Rob's heart's desire, Tom knows that."

After coming fourth and just missing out on a medal in the synchronised diving, Tom is determined to do well in tomorrow night’s Olympic solo diving competition.

The diver received nationwide support after being attacked by a cyber-bully who accused the Olympic star on Twitter of “letting down” his dad Rob.

Although Tom swiftly dealt with the abuse by retweeting the nasty message, his mum found it more difficult to cope with.

Debbie explained: “In retrospect, I think I was more upset than Tom.

“Tom might be 18 and more than capable of handling bullies but he's still my son and I am the only parent left to defend him."

Adding: "Personally, I have no expectations of my son. I ask only that he loves what he does. The minute he stops loving it, he must stop doing it."

Despite any upset caused by the Twitter bully, Tom’s mum has said that the teen is feeling positive about tomorrow’s heat and has been overwhelmed by the encouragement he's received from his fans.

He has also found himself some famous supporters, having been sent tweets from the likes of David Beckham, Cheryl Cole, Paris Jackson and One Direction.
