Monica and Ross are brother and sister. Chandler is Ross's friend from college, Joey is Chandler's flatmate. Rachel is Monica's friend from school. So how did any of them ever end up meeting Phoebe? Phoebe has no connection to any of the gang (apart from that time she mugged Ross when they were teenagers), and we never find out how exactly the rest of them meet her in the first place.
