X Factor bosses are reportedly concerned by the escalating rivalry between judges Nicole Scherzinger and Tulisa Contostavlos.

Barely two weeks into the new series hitting our TV screens and cracks are starting to show, as reportedly Nicole and Tulisa, 24, are vying for centre stage.

A show insider revealed to the Mail on Sunday that the former N-Dubz star “can't stand” the 34-year-old’s attention seeking behaviour and they are “already rubbing each other up the wrong way”.

They added: “Tulisa thinks Nicole hogs the limelight, singing and getting to her feet during auditions.

“It really aggravates Tulisa. And Nicole fawns over Gary Barlow, getting really touchy feely with him at every opportunity.”

With several months of filming ahead, X Factor producers are reportedly desperate for the girls to make up and avoid arguments that might detract from the show’s search to find the latest pop star.

The rift looks set to cause additional problems for the show, which has already had disappointing viewing figures for the past two weeks.

An average of just 8.1 million tuned in to ITV1 for the first episode, which is down more than 2 million on last year’s debut of 10.5 million.

It’s been said that this was the worst start to an X Factor series since 2006 and a dramatic contrast to 2010, when a record 11.1million viewers switched on for the first episode.

In a bid to increase audience numbers and excitement about the new series, the Daily Mail report that Simon Cowell will be making an appearance “in some guise”.

Since moving to the US two years ago to launch US X Factor, Mr Nasty has been replaced on the UK judging panel by Gary Barlow.

But show bosses are hoping that his triumphant return either in person or via video link from his home in Los Angeles will revive flagging interest in the series.

Richard Holloway, executive producer of the ITV1 talent show, confirmed to the Daily Mail that the 52-year-old music mogul will be back before the show's finale at Christmas.

Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival, he cryptically revealed: “That’s all I’m prepared to say - it’s not a hologram.”

Will Simon end up playing mediator between Tulisa and Nicole?
