Gary Barlow said: “You turned that song on its head. It’s a silly dance song but you gave those lyrics meaning tonight.”
He added: “This wasn’t the performance of the night, it was the performance of the series so far.”
And Louis Walsh enthused: "What a brilliant interpretation. You are a real professional, you had a tough week but when you get on that stage you own it.”
But fans of a YouTube star named Noah, who has 21,688 followers on Twitter, quickly noted that James' version of the dance track sounded very familiar.
Noah's cover of Sexy And I Know It has had over 13 million views on YouTube and puts the same indie twist on the song.
One angry fan wrote: "All work is done by Noah and James gets the fame! This makes me feel sick in my stomach!"
Another said: "It just made me mad, that half Europe will sing a rendition you made...because it will now land all over the uk that sucks!"
Though James didn't mention 18-year-old Noah when receiving praise for his version of the track from the judges, he did take to Twitter to thank him.
James, 24, tweeted: "@only1noah thnx for the inspiration Noah! the Xfactoruk team loved your version and asked me to put a spin on your spin + fatboyslim feel x."
And there were obviously no hard feelings, as Noah replied: "Thx Gr8 job!"
And some of Noah's fans were rather pleased his cover got recognition by such a huge TV show.
