We may be counting the pennies, but new stats show we're not about to curb our beauty spending in spite of the economic downturn.
While few of us are even entertaining the thought of buying a house, car or pricey holiday, the cosmetics industry is going strong as we're consoling ourselves with smaller luxuries. Online retailer Beauty Counter Direct reported pre-Christmas sales up 43% and St Tropez sales were up 20% in the third quarter of 2008.
St. Tropez tanning expert Nichola Joss, whose clientele includes naturally pale-skinned stars Keira Knightley, Erin O’Connor and Lily Cole, says: “During these unsure times, convenient and cost-effective beauty regimes that help put a spring in your step are in growing demand. Women want beauty products that deliver positive, feel good benefits."
Which in practice means: it's OK to treat yourself to the odd product for your poor bare cupboard without feeling guilty!
