If you find yourself bickering in the aisles of Blockbuster with your other half, then you're not alone. A recent survey by Direct Line has found that men and women have opposite tastes when it comes to movies.

For the guys, unsurprisingly, sex, action scenes and plenty of nudity are the ingredients of their perfect man-film, whereas women prefer films wtih songs and dancing, the opportunity to cry and not much nudity at all.

The research found that twice as many men look for sex in a film as women (25 per cent compared with 12 per cent), with four times as many men (21 per cent) wanting nudity.

Car chases also came high in the survey with 36 per cent of men wanting a good car chase scene compared with only 17 per cent of women. That must be why there have been so many Fast and Furious films. We just can't see the appeal as girls!

In contrast, women prefer to indulge in a weepie (28 per cent compared with 15 per cent of men).

Next movie night there are a few things you can both agree on - overly complicated plots won't get a look in as 33 per cent men and 37 per cent women found tricky plots a turn off.

Jane Crowther, associate editor at film magazine Total Film, said: “This research shows that the men and women really can’t agree on films – when you see a couple arguing at the cinema about what to watch, this research proves why.

"Films take us on an emotional journey and allow us to feel a range of different emotions – what this research seems to suggest is that what women want from a film is something which reaffirms a positive world view, whereas men want films which tap into the very basic attributes of being alive – death, adrenaline and sex.”

Matt Owen, spokesperson for insurance firm Direct Line, which commissioned the study, said: “Our research shows that film lovers are very clear about what they like – and especially what they don’t like – with overly-complicated, lengthy movies being among the worst offenders.
