5 lessons we can learn from the women of Mad Men

It might be called Mad Men, but really it’s all about the women.

Reflecting the nuance of gender politics from that time, the women of Mad Men – Peggy Olson, Joan Harris, Megan Draper, Betty Francis and Trudy Campbell – all struggle to make their way in the male-dominated world in which they live.

While the men ostensibly had it all in the 1950s and 1960s, women certainly had the raw end of the deal, with their limited options comprising of being a stay-at-home mum, a secretary or a receptionist.

Women were submissive, subjugated and ignored by the general male populace, but attitudes were beginning to change, especially with the rise of the Women’s Liberation Movement and the publication of The Feminine Mystique, which gave a voice to previously ignored unhappy suburban housewives.

As these ambitious and complex women in Mad Men fight to forge their own place in the world in the face of rampant sexism, we can’t help but root for them as they seek independence and – most importantly – demand respect.

Over 50 years later and the problem of inequality and sexism is still a pressing issue, but there are some crucial life lessons we can take away from the women of Mad Men.

All in very different ways, Peggy, Joan, Megan, Betty and Trudy illustrate how important it is to stand up, speak out and take what you want, because otherwise you’re not going to get very far in life.
