Originally from Lousiana, Britney burst onto the music scene as a teenager in 1998, with 'Baby, One More Time', which gave her a number one hit at the tender age of 17.

Britney had been singing in church and performing in dance recitals since she was tiny, at age eight, she auditioned for 'The Mickey Mouse Club'. She was deemed too young, so spent three years in New York studying dance and acting, which lead to a role on Broadway in 1991. Still yearning for fame on the small screen, she auditioned a second time for 'The Mickey Mouse Club' and eventually joined in 1993. For two years, she worked with Christina Aguilera and boyfriend Justin Timberlake, until the programme eventually came off Air in 1995.

After deciding on a singing career, she sent a tape to Jive Records (famous for launching the Backstreet Boys), who produced her first album 'Baby, One More Time' with Eric Foster White, credited with successful albums for Whitney Houston and Boyzone. 1999 was her big year, with phenomenal success for the title single taken from her first album. Her second album, 'Oops, I did it Again', came out a year later, before a messy break-up with N'Sync frontman Justin Timberlake. Her third, eponymously titled album, was not as successful as the first two, coming shortly before her cinematic flop 'Crossroads'.

She ditched her teen Queen image in 2003, to re-invent herself as a raunchy sex goddess for the album 'In the Zone'. One of her personal high points was collaborating with her idol Madonna on 'Me Against the Music'.

Her greatest hits album was released in time for Christmas 2004.
