Biography - Beastie Boys | Published by peejay | The band, consisting of Adam 'MCA' Yaunch, Kate Shellenbach and John Berry made their punk debut at Adam's 17th birthday. The middle class kids from New York went on to release the song 'Pollywog Stew' before going their separate ways.
Adam then recruited Mike 'D' Diamond and guitarist Adam 'Ad Rock' Horovitz in 1983 and the Beastie Boys, as we know them, were born. The 'Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence' were signed to Rick Rubin's fledgling label, Def Jam and released their first album in 1986..
'Licenced to Ill', featuring hits such as 'Fight For Your Right To Party', was an immediate smash, and the band became the first ever rap group to top the US charts.
Following a problem with royalites, the group split from their label. They went on to set up their own magazine, studio and label, Grand Royal.
Their follow-up album, 'Paul's Boutique', co-produced by the Dust Brothers, was released in 1986. Rated four stars by Rolling Stone Magazine, the album also enjoyed international success.
Other hits include 'Hello Nasty' (1998), featuring 'Intergalactic'.
The Beastie Boys are supported by DJ 'Mix Master Mike' Schwartz. |
