Anna Friel was born in 1976 in Rochdale in Greater Manchester. At the age of 13, she was hired by Channel 4, where she started her acting career. She joined the cast of TV soap Brookside in 1992, causing much controversy when she fiilmed British TV's first pre-watershed lesbian kiss.
Since 2001, she has been dating David Thewliss, with whom she has a daughter Gracie Ellen Mary Friel, born in July 2005.
