American filmmaker Steven Spielberg wants to convince the organisers of the next Olympic games to honour the victims who were assassinated at the Munich games in 1972. According to the New York Post, the director, who is bringing the story to the silver screen, wants the organisers of the games in Beijing, 2008, to have a minute of silence in honour of those who died. At the Munich games eight Palestinian terrorists took Israelian athletes hostage. By the time all was done, 11 Israelis, 5 terrorists and one German police officer were dead. A spokesperson for Spielberg explained, "His goal is to get the IOC to properly acknowledge the Munich massacre." The International Olympic Committe games organisers, have already rejected an effort to create a ceremony to honour the fallen athletes, stating it would be "too political". |
