Self-confessed junkie Pete Doherty has escaped prison, after being found guilty of possessing large amounts of Class A drugs. The Babyshambles singer was stopped and searched on November 30th, when police found heroin and cocaine. He was stopped again four days later and found to have more illegal substances on him and for a third time on 26th January, after which he was taken into custody.
In a sentence handed down at Ealing Magistrate's Court in London yesterday, Doherty was given a year-long community order and ordered to complete a 12-month detoxification programme, after pleading guilty to a total of seven charges.
After spending the last two weeks in police custody, he was pleased to escape a jail sentence. In an interview with Radio , the star vowed to give up drugs, saying that he "would rather be on the outside with no smack than inside prison with no smack." He will be subject to monthly drug tests and will be locked up immediately, should he fail them.
The judge in the case defended his decision, by saying that Doherty only represented a danger to himself. |
