The Da Vinci Code premiered on Wednesday night at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, to a less than enthusiastic reception. The film, adapted from Dan Brown's book, didn't go down well with critics at the press showing, with sources saying that there was no applause at the end of the film as well as uncomfortable silences and fits of laughter at inappropriate points during the film. Aside from the reviews, the film has come under attack from the Catholic church, which stringly disapproves of the its message and has called for a box-office boycott. Directed by Ron Howard (American Graffiti, A Beautiful Mind), the film stars Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou and Jean Reno and suggests that Jesus had a secret romance which left a line of descendants, following the story fo the bestsellering book. |
