Residents of a Romanian village are suing Borat filmmakers and want scenes removed from the comedy.
According to the BBC, the residents of the fictional village of Borat are demanding $30 million. In the hugely successful film, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen plays a Kazakh journalist travelling across the United States. The Romanians were seemingly misled about the content and tone of the film, and believed it would be about poverty and the difficulties of life in Romania. However, they don't see the funny side and say they're portrayed as thieves and criminals. They now want their scenes removed. George Brilliant, spokesperson for Borat, said: "The village was used as a set to portray a fictional village in Kazakhstan. It was clearly a satire." The village in question is located 137 kilometres from Romania's capital, Bucarest. The film has been a massive hit at box-offices in Europe and the US. |
