Talk show Queen Oprah Winfrey has opened a school for young girls in South Africa. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls has opened its doors in the village of Henley-on-Klip in Johannesburg. The $40 million school will educate 150 girls aged from 11 to 12. Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Sidney Poitier, Chris Tucker, Spike Lee and Tina Turner were all present for the opening ceremony, and each brought an autographed book for the school's library. Nelson Mandela, who inspired Winfrey to construct the school, was also present. Winfrey explained, "Girls who are educated are less likely to get HIV/AIDS, and in this country, which has such a pandemic, we have to begin to change." Winfrey added, "I was a poor girl who grew up with my grandmother, like so many of these girls, with no water and electricity. I wanted to give this opportunity to girls who had a light so bright that not even poverty could dim that light." |
