Chris Martin describes Coldplay's third album as his biggest challenge to date. In an interrview with NME, Martin said, "Writing is what we’ve been doing all day, every day. It’s been quite turbulent. We’ve been through a lot of songs and a lot of sounds, a lot of studios."
Recording brought with it many ups and downs; the band used producer, Ken Nelson for the album, finally completing it with the help of Danton Supple.
Martin revealed that their sound has been influenced by 70's electro, sampling Kraftwerk's 'Computer Love' for the song 'Talk'. The man with the voice went on to add, "We’ve got some fucking good songs. That’s one thing we are sure of."
