Bono honoured in the US

U2 singer Bono has been honoured for his humanitarian work in Africa.

The Irish singer has been given the Liberty Medal, awarded by the US National Constitution Center in recognition of charity work. Bono was selected because he "demonstrated leadership and vision in the pursuit of liberty".

The award also includes $100,000, to be donated to the Debt Aids Trade Africa foundation, which bono founded in 2002.

Six previous winners of the Liberty Medal have gone on to win Nobel prizes.
