During a trip to Peru, Cameron Diaz caused offence by carrying a handbag imprinted with a communist slogan. The 33-year-old actress visited the city of Machu Picchu carrying a green bag that had the words "Serve the People" written on it. The slogan was one of the favourites of the Chinese communist leader Mao Tse-Tung. During the 1980s and 1990s, the Chinese government was at war with Peru, and thousands of Peruvians lost their lives in the fighting. Needless to say, Cameron's bag was not appreciated by the locals. In a statement received by the Associated Press, Diaz expressed her apology, explaining that she did not realize the meaning of the words on her bag when she bought it in China. |
