Spice Girls single fails to fly off shelves

Spice Girls single fails to fly off shelves - Emma Bunton
Published by chereesofem

The Spice Girls' comeback single is struggling to set the UK charts alight.

The group's new song 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' has only made it to a disappointing number 10 in the midweek UK singles chart after shifting just 5,278 copies.

All proceeds from the song are going to the BBC charity appeal 'Children In Need', but that hasn't helped the girls come close to knocking Leona Lewis' single 'Bleeding Heart' off the top spot this coming Sunday (25.11.07).

A source said: "There was so much type surrounding the song but it has so far failed to match this in sales.

"However, there is still time for it to make a late surge for the number one spot."

BBC Radio 1 bosses deemed the song so bad they relegated it to their C playlist, meaning it received poor airplay.

George Ergatoudis, the station's head of music, said: "The song simply isn't strong enough. It would have been a B-side in their heyday."

Leona - who shot to fame after winning last year's 'X Factor' TV talent show - also kept the Spice Girls' 'Greatest Hits' album off the top spot in the UK album charts last week with her debut offering 'Spirit', which sold a record-breaking 375,000 copies in seven days.

Although the Spice Girls - Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel B, Victoria Beckham and Mel C - have failed to match expectations with their record sales, they have still managed to sell a staggering 750,000 tickets for their 40-date comeback world tour.

The mammoth run of shows kick-off in Vancouver, Canada, on December 2.
