The 54-year-old actor and his wife Kelly Preston said an emotion farewell to 16-year-old Jett - who died last week after suffering a seizure in the family's Bahamas hotel - at a service in the garden of their £5 million Florida mansion.
Close friends of the couple attended the Scientology memorial, which was held in a white marquee filled with flowers including roses and lilies.
John's lawyer Michael McDermott said: "Words cannot explain how close John and Jett were. This will take a lot of time. John's life will never be the same again."
A Scientology minister led the service, which was used to celebrate Jett's short life. Readings were taken from the works of L. Ron Hubbard, who founded the controversial religion.
Fans and well-wishers gathered outside the gates of the mansion to show their support for John and his family.
The family's neighbour Jacob Urbowicz said: "John waves to me from his plane, and for somebody like him to do that is pretty special. My 10-year-old son Alexander and Jett would smile and wave at each other when they saw each other."
Fan Bobby Weiand, 13, dropped off flowers and said: "I thought it was really important to be here today because I can only understand how hard it is for the family since their son was only three years older than me."
Tom Cruise - who is a fellow Scientologist and has been a close friend of the Travoltas' for years - has opened up about his own heartbreak at the loss of Jett.
Speaking on US talk show 'The View', Tom said: "It's just horrific. Here you have two doting parents, they're wonderful people.
"I remember Jett when he was born. I saw him when he was just a few months old and John just adored him, and both of his children, and Kelly. I just don't have the words for it." |
