A US TV interview last Friday between Tom Cruise and Matt Lauer, host of the NBC Today Show, was particularly heated, and has had some surprising consequences. Tom Cruise became very edgy when questioned about his criticism of women taking anti-depressants, with Brooke Shields being one woman who did not take kindly to his bold statements, and retaliated with media criticism. She has recently thanked him however, for the inadvertent sales boost that his comments gave her new book on her experiences with post-natal depression, Down Came the Rain Cruise told Lauer, "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do." The tension only increased when Lauer stated he knows people that have been helped by Ritalin, and asked Cruise if he knew the effects of this drug. Cruise once again criticised Lauer, telling him not to speak about issues he has not studied. The temperature was raised even more, when Cruise was questioned about Scientology, the a religious group that Cruise and fiancée Katie Holmes are involved with. The 42 year-old actor proposed to Holmes, 26, just last week, amidst rumours that their relationship is no more than a publicity stunt. Cruise, who has been previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, refused to shed any light on what this woman is giving him that the others could not. "I don't want to compare things," Cruise claimed. The recent focus on their relationship has not pleased producers of the War of the Worlds, who would prefer the attention to be directed at the movie, set for release on June 29th. |
