The biggest stars in the world came out at the Live 8 concerts around the globe on Saturday, to fight hunger and poverty in Africa, hopefully showing the G8 leaders that people in the Western world believe that third-world debt should be cancelled. The hugely successful concerts were held simultaneously in 10 different cities, including London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin, Johannesburg, Rome and Moscow, and were covered on both radio and television, reaching over 3 billion people. The 10-hour concert in London's Hyde Park, featured moving performances from Paul McCartney, U2, Madonna, the Who, Coldplay, Elton John, Dido, REM, Joss Stone, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey and a reunited Pink Floyd. Will Smith hosted the Philadelphia show where Destiny's child, Jay Z and Bon Jovi performed, while Nelson Mandela even made an appearance at the South Africa event. The idea behind the concerts, was to make the world aware of the suffering and hunger in the neediest countries. Every three seconds a child dies in Africa, a fact highlighted by Make Poverty History's Click campaign. |
