Research indicates that one in five people in the UK alone will suffer from depression at some point in their lives, and more than 10% of people in the UK are living with the condition every day. But what is depression? And how much do you actually know about the most common psychiatric disorder? Becky Middleton explains...

Depression is medically defined as a persistent low mood, feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, anxiety, poor concentration and a change in normal behaviour on a day-to-day basis. The latter so much so that a loved one would notice the change.

More and more cases are diagnosed every day in the UK, with many people being referred to a therapist or started on anti-depressant medication such as Fluoxetine, also known as Prozac. The type of treatment depends on the individual and the severity of the depression.
