The Roxy Beach Body Workout
As the name suggests Roxy and Virgin Active's new Beach Body Workout aims to give you a figure worthy of sandy shores anywhere. But with the focus firmly on strength, balance, flexibility and power it also prepares you for hitting the waves.
'We worked with Roxy surfers and looked at their surfing moves to create the work out' says Virgin Active's national group exercise manager, Gillian Reeves, who teaches the class I've come to try out. 'It can help prepare your body for surfing or the beach.'
The four areas of focus for the work out concentrate on perfecting the 'pop up' move that takes the surfer from flat on the board to upright.
But you don't have to be a surfer to benefit: 'I've never tried surfing' Gillian tells me, 'I'd never even really thought about it, but now I quite fancy having a go'.
The techniques used in the work out are so effective in conditioning the body that Virgin have rolled the work out to all 71 of their clubs nationwide. After all, this time of year the demand for beach-ready bodies steps up a notch - whether for lying flat on your back or in readiness for more active seaside pursuits.
