Wine of the Week: Coteaux du Tricastin 2009, France | |||||||||
Rhône, France Alc. 13.5% from £5.99 - Waitrose It's a region of France often overlooked for it's wine - probably because neighbouring Bordeaux and Bourgogne are so dominating. But Rhône Valley wine makers are coming into their own. The higher altitudes and more northerly situation mean peppery Syrah grapes florish and often under-pin the flavour of wines from this region. Bella - the hostess - *** You certainly get the peppery-flavour in the Coteaux du Tricastin - it just makes you hanker after a fat steak or a beef stew. I love the freshness - it's an anomoly as you feel it ought to be heavy but that doesn't come across. You could just as easily drink a glass pre-dinner as you could with your boeuf bourguignon. Billie - the lightweight - * Oh no, there's just way to much going on. It's too complicated. I could manage it with some meat but on it's own it doesn't do anything for me. Vienna - the wine lover - *** Bold. The flavours of summer fruits aren't over-powered by the spice in that dark pepper finish. It's lighter and crisper than you expect which is welcome - there's a faint acidity which cuts through and mellows to a soft finish. Bold but not brash at all. |
