Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador today (12.10.09) in recognition of his work and commitment to the rights of children around the world.
Orlando Bloom has been appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
The Hollywood actor was given the title today (12.10.09) by the United Nations Children's Fund in recognition of his work and commitment to the rights of children around the world.
He said: "I look forward to working with UNICEF as they continue to make the world a better place for children.
"UNICEF doesn't just deliver humanitarian aid, which is what they are known for all over the world. They also educate and provide tools which help women and children face challenges specific to their own lives. I responded to how UNICEF works as much as I did to the work itself. I look forward to learning more and to supporting UNICEF anyway I can."
The 32-year-old actor has worked with the organisation since 2007, when he travelled with them to visit schools in poor areas of Nepal. He returned to the area in 2008 to monitor what work was being done to improve the cleanliness of drinking water in the region.
Orlando joins a host of other celebrities in his new role, including soccer star David Beckham, singer Shakira, actor Sir Roger Moore and actresses Mia Farrow and Vanessa Redgrave.
UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman said: "Advocacy from UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors helps build momentum to improve the lives of children around the world. We are proud to have Orlando Bloom as one of the strong voices for vulnerable children."
As an ambassador of the organisation, Orlando will continue to promote UNICEF's work and influence global policy on behalf of children around the world. |
