Serena Williams and her older sister Venus began playing tennis at an early age, under the the instruction of their father. The sisters burst onto the competition circuit, winning the French Open doubles title in 1999. That same year Serena also won the US Open singles title, aged just 17. This was to mark the beginning of a hugely successful grand slam career for both girls, who would inevitably win the doubles, and play each other in the singles final in most championships for the next few years!. Serena proved herself to be the strongest of the two and in 2003 she achieved the ultimate, by winning all four grand slams.
