People Are Burning Off Their Split Ends And It's LITerally Insane

How far would you go to avoid a haircut that means losing some of those precious centimetres you've worked so hard to grow? Would you DIY it? Or better still, would you make like Alessandra Ambrosio and swap the scissors for a candle to burn your split ends off instead? Those with a fear of fire look away now 'cos this hair hack will leave your hairs standing on end - quite LITerally.

We all know the important part regular haircuts play in the quest for glossy, healthy locks - even if it does pain us to part with our lengths and cash in the process, but forget your bog standard trim because there's a new type of haircut in town designed to remove your scraggy ends.

In quite possibly the most dangerous hair hack to emerge from the beauty sphere yet, people are burning off their split ends with candles rather than cutting them the traditional way, and it's bonkers!

The technique known as 'velaterapia' or 'candle cutting' started in Brazil in the 1960s and is now sweeping the world one flame at a time. The treatment involves splitting the hair into small, twisted sections to make them look a bit like dreadlocks, then running a naked flame and down each section until all of the split ends are burnt off. Once the burning is complete, a deeply intense treatment is applied.

But there's method to this madness I promise so hear me out. The aim of the game is to remove the dead ends which stick up away from the hair without having to lose any of that precious length.

Stylists trained in this in-salon treatment claim it opens the hair follicles and helps them retain moisture by singeing away any breakage from bleaching and heat. I'm sure it goes without saying that this is one best left to the professionals so don't be trying it at home!

Famous fans of the treatment include models Barbara Fialho, Alessandra Ambrosio and Isabeli Fontana, and you know what they say, if it's good enough for a Victoria's Secret Angel it's good enough for us.

If you want to try it out for yourself you better get saving though because glossy manes like theirs don't come cheap - a single velaterapia treatment can set you back a whopping anything from £116 to £155.
