Our sweet Sam Smith won an Oscar last night for his original Bond song 'Writing on the Wall' and during his acceptance speech he mentioned how he thought he was the first openly gay man to receive an Oscar. Obviously this was intended to be an inspirational message, but he probably should have done some research first. Not only did one of the other openly gay people to accept an Oscar, Dustin Lance Black, have something to say about it, there was some serious shade thrown his way...

During Sam's speech, he said: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”

Oh Sam, this is a wonderful message to the LGBT community of course, but this is the Oscars! Why oh why didn't you research this little piece of info because including it in your speech?! Since Elton John and Dustin Lance Black have both won Oscars before, Dustin didn't appreciate the lack of research.

Tom Daley's fiance, who won the Academy Award for his Original Screenplay 'Milk' in 2009, tweeted Sam some knowledge, but also threw some serious personal shade at the same time.

Since Twitter users frankly LIVE for celebrity spats, the reactions quickly (and hilariously) spiralled out of control:

Do you think Dustin had a point, but perhaps reacted a little rashly? Tweet us @sofeminineUK!
