Mac and cheese is having a long-overdue moment and it’s finally been given the food-gasm-worthy upgrade it’s been crying out for. They say a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips but we’ll cherish every second of that and worry about the waistline later.

1. The Mac and Cheese-burger

The appropriately-named Mac Daddy burger by London restaurant chain Dirty Bones is the stuff hangover prayers are made of. If a 6oz meaty patty topped with pulled beef, mac and cheese and a healthy helping of house BBQ sauce (*drools*) doesn’t fix you, nothing will.

2. Mac and Cheese Bites

What’s better than a plate pilled high with pasta dripping with grilled cheese? Tiny balls of that contained in deep-fried breadcrumbs, thank you Marks and Spencer.

If you’d rather prepare your own, look no further than here

3. The Mac and Cheese Pizza

God bless the Italians and their carb culture. Why have pizza OR pasta when you can have both?

5. The Mac and Cheese Toastie

So sinful but tantalisingly tasty, your body isn’t going to know what’s hit it. Let street-food favourites Grill My Cheese take your love for all things white carbs to a whole new level with their creatively-titled offering - Baby Got Mac. Warning: This is not for the carb conscious.

6. The Mac and Cheese Bacon Taco

Dude, that’s some serious food. Us Brits are forever getting grief for our unhealthy obsession with the staple fried-breakfast item but can you blame us when bacon-weaved tacos are a thing?

Thank you for the impending heart attack, DudeFoods.

7. Mac and Cheese with Pulled Pork

What do you get when two holy grails of the pop-up-food-stall trend collide? An explosion of flavour which takes some beating.

8. Mac and Three-Cheese Stuffed Peppers

Add some crunch to your favourite meal by spooning a healthy amount of it into roasted peppers to make for the perfect packed-lunch treat.

9. The Homemade Mac and Cheeseburger

A variation on the Mac Daddy - but no less deserving of its title - the Mac Attack is the creative genius of Chicago-based chef Amanda Downing. Instead of spooning the melty marvel in between the brioche, mac and cheese acts as a tastier alternative to the actual bun which means double the gooey goodness.

10. The Mac and Cheese Pie

Upgrade your favourite pasta-and-cheese dish by chucking in some ham and encasing it in a thin ready-mixed pastry thanks to the domestic goddess that is Betty Crocker.

11. Semi-healthy Mac and Cheese Bites

Think of these sweet potato mac and cheese cups as the healthier alternative to entry 2. These child-friendly snacks only take ten minutes of your precious time but a tenth of that to demolish.

12. The Mac and Cheese Burrito

This wouldn't be a foodie listicle without a contribution from the Mexicans and they, like everyone else, are doing everything they can to rid the humble dish of its bland reputation. The Soulritto is the brain child of 'Mr. E' of San Fran's Papalote Mexican Grill and Pam Warren who owns Piccadilly Catering in Cali. Word about their salsa-infused mac and cheese wrapped in soft flour tortillas spread so fast it sold out within 30 minutes.

13. Magical Mac and Cheese

OK, OK, there isn't anything strictly magical about this variety but the rainbow colours convinced us otherwise. One trick it can master is fulfilling your carb cravings and that's good enough for us.

14. The Lazy Girl's Mac and Cheese

If all else fails and you find yourself in desperate need of a mac and cheese fix and miles away from your kitchen, Pret-A-Manger do a suitably tasty kale and cauliflower variety.
